Who we are

Spirit Awakening is a 501(c)(3) arts organization dedicated to helping at-risk youth and children in the juvenile justice system realize their spiritual identities. We use meditation, creative writing, improvisation and visual arts to build character and raise self-esteem one child at a time. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Violence is the language of the unheard." This is why we have spent the past 21 years teaching the unheard the power of positive and productive expression.

Spirit Awakening Programs

A series of programs, conducted both in and outside detainment camps, that teach at-risk and incarcerated youth to express themselves through creative writing and visual arts— helping them build a foundation for communication and success.

 Voices of the Unheard

An annual celebration of the written and spoken word of child detainees, as well as a published compilation of their essays, poems, and metaphysical musings. Both showcase and celebrate the unedited voices of our most vulnerable citizens.

 Leadership Retreats at Esalen

An annual retreat for advanced Spirit Awakening students at the beautiful Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California. Here, students gain insight into themselves and each other through the peace and stillness of nature.

Serving Overseas Ghana W. Africa

Angels of Redemption is our bi-annual outreach trip to Ghana in which students explore culture, history and the impact it has on them. Spirit Awakeners also visit St. Anne's Orphanage to provide the children with food, friendship, toys and tutelage.
